A
PHOTOGRAPHER IS NOT A PROFESSION
Many
kinds of hobbies are wanted by many people, one of which is photography. Photography
is very enjoyable hobby. Although it takes high cost, it can bring special
satisfaction.
Photographing
activity can be used as mental refreshing or spiritual therapy. By taking the
picture of certain object, for example, whether realized or not, we are
learning to position something harmoniously as our feeling and perspective.
When we are in bad mood, sometimes our capture of certain object will also be
poor, missing object and poor setting and object scale, etc. In our daily life,
we are always faced with the reality and hard problems and in taking picture,
it actually contains lesson to disclose such phenomena, looking for point of
view of various sides and putting them in our point of view. Through
photographing, we can also realize the amazingness of His creations, thus
relaxing our egoism when we are faced with the beauty and greatness of the
object in front of us.
First
of all, I love the photography as hobby. I frequently have long journey to the
places I have never been before, and I try to think how to capture an object
which I can monumentalize. At that time, I finally brought pocket digital
camera to capture the object or moment. But, I did not feel satisfied with the
camera which was very normal. At that time, I finally bought DSLR camera 450 D
Canon; in fact, it cost very high for college student like me, but I was not
disappointed since the result was very satisfying. Now, it is different, the
photography can be a hobby which can realize my creativeness.
Many
people perceive that photographer is a profession. To me, photographer is not a
profession, but it is one’s hobby in expressing the works through photographs.
In my opinion, photography is a hobby rather than a life choice, "not a
profession". In this photography, we can train our visual carefulness in
playing with colors, style, moment, and making the moment into valuable thing.
As the time changes, I have intention to memorize the important moments in my
life. In fact, it is not easy to deal with hobby of photography, since, to me,
this is very expensive hobby. In fact, going through this hobby, at least we
have to spend considerable amount of money. Some people are still loyal with
the old camera, pocket camera, or phone cell camera. However, when someone has
been serious in pursuing the photography, he/she will spend his/her savings,
moreover the cost for equipment and tools, lens, lighting, studio, accessories,
etc, at least, making us spending a lot of money.

THE POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHER
At the time,
there was currently a class photo in the Pondok, the photographer activities
piqued my interest. A photographer must have a high imagination to imagine all
kinds of different angles to obtain incredible photos, and the ability to try,
taste, and see. Not only that, the photographer showed his skill in lining up
people and set the menu in the camera. It was very interesting, simple but it
needs special obligation to pictures which would be enjoyed by other people.
A huge
responsibility is very important for a photographer, how the output would later
satisfies people and still has its own aesthetic values of photography. Knowing
the camera is also a photographer’s responsibility, besides lighting, shutter
speed, and color balance, those are the things that a photographer must conquer
to achieve great pictures without the help of a computer. According to me, a
less interesting picture may be repaired by digital imaging or other
photographic software, although not all photographic mistakes may need digital
enhancing, “even the best design, still won’t match a natural picture.”
In photographic
works, creating a good picture must be supported by other equipments, to help
achieve colorful, captivating pictures. In creating good fashion &
prewedding pictures between the model/client and the photographer there must be
cooperation and communication because natural works are pictures produced with
no exaggerating design, because the majority of client’s requests are recommending
certain designs or digital processing. “Photography is a maturity,” I quote
this sentence from a famous Indonesian photographer, Darwis Triadi. His books
are one of my inspirations in learning the world of photography, because
photography is not just a profession. But, to a broader responsibility. And
there is no more pouting between professions. Photography is a step to be
ourselves and to build inner character, creating a masterpiece is one of the
way to not copy someone else’s works, never scorn other works, but motivate and
evaluate, because we are living under the same roof, under one goal, that is
the world of photography.
“Let
common people judge our behaviors and works. Not our colleagues in the same
environment, judging our works with full subjectivity. One day, we will live in
a condition with no more works. And how beautiful this life would be if we were
known as someone who created many art
works that are in line with our personal self or a good character self (Darwis
Triadi).”
Maturity is a
concept that teach a photographer to be always tidy in choosing his objects and
the selection of designs to be built, our maturity in facing other things
ethically, fold the concept of a
picture, maturity is an important factorwhich can be seen as how far and what
kind of photographer that we face our world with. Even when we cannot face
problems very well, we would eventually fall into that world, because other
concept is the picture that we created.
Results are
something that society enjoy, the level at which our photos right at the target
of the consumers. Photographers must be able to feel an object, balance is a
definition of a photographer, it can describe certain events that were recorded
in the camera. For example, journalistic, photographers must be ready to obtain
photographs directly ready to be consumed, without siding with neither party.
In my opinion, a
journalistic photographer, other than obtains news, he also must be able to
capture pictures that are in line with the news. When I read a Newspaper and
magazines presenting some news accompanied with pictures, sometimes I don’t
agree with what were presented, but that did not mean that the pictures or the
news were bad, but the news and the pictures were not balanced enough. Balance
is a photographer’s aim in capturing objects. Composition is one of the ways to
measure the beauty of a photo. The placing of elements, balance, and the
compatibility between the main object and background, color tone, highlight,
and shadow will affect this composition.
I think that a
photographer is very amazing, I’m not a professional photographer, but I like
very much this world of photography, the responsibility, intelligence to face
maturity and to give information balance to be presented. The beauty of nature,
give by Allah SWT have made this world the place of creatures to gather, I
cannot imagine how long will this beautiful nature can be enjoyed. Making
others feel important, valuable, and belong to society without bringing the
predicate as a photographer.
